Video: Cellular Forms by Andy Lomas

Max Coopers Seething is a musical version of human intensity, complemented visually in this video by Andy Lomass presentation of the seething, unstoppable and unrelenting propagation of life.

The simulation work originates from Andy Lomas study titled cellular forms, which uses digital simulation of a simplified biological model of morphogenesis, with three-dimensional structures generated out of interconnected particles to represent cells.

Each form starts with a initial spherical cluster of cells which is incrementally developed over time by adding iterative layers of complexity to the structure. The aim is to create forms emergently: exploring generic similarities between many different shapes in nature rather than emulating any particular organism, revealing universal archetypal forms that can come from growth-like processes rather than top-down externally engineered design.

Cell division is controlled by accumulated nutrient levels. When the level in a cell exceeds a given threshold the cell divides, and various parameters control how both the parent and daughter cells re-connect to their immediate neighbours. New nutrient can be created by photons in cells hit by incident light rays. Nutrient can also be allowed to flow to adjacent cells. The simulation process is repeated over thousands of iterations and millions of particles, with each of the final structures comprising over fifty million cells.

Album mini-site with all explained: www.yearningfortheinfinite.net

I wanted to make something huge and intense for the new live show, so I went for a project attempting to visualise the infinite and its links to us in our everyday lives. For every chapter of the story I found a different technique to approach it, in this case, the simple idea of repetition. Apply it, and we have a form of infinity. This was also a natural fit for my music, where I had a nice excuse to push the repetitive boat out even more than usual. I kept it very stripped back to focus on the idea, with slow evolution and occasional variants to maintain some melodic engagement.

Visually, I was lucky to get to work with one of my favourite artists, Kevin McGlouglin, where we told the human side of the story, our endless pursuit of growth and «progress», our duplication of built form and expanding cities, looking to an unbounded future of urban sprawl. It was an audio-visualisation encompassing the project title «Yearning for the Infinite». But despite our society-endangering issues around human consumption and sustainability, it wasnt supposed to be a doom scenario. We tried that musically and it didnt seem to fit. There was a back and forth on the ideas and their musical and visual representation, and what worked was something that for me seems more focused on the worth of our endless striving than its possible role in our downfall.

— — — KEVIN MCGLOUGHLIN:
Repetition is an attempt to convey the importance of our endless endeavours toward human development and growth amidst a chaotic and disorienting landscape.

The struggle for a fruitful future is challenging with the distractions of everyday life alongside its ever-growing technological advancements.

The hope is for humanity to strive through all of this in a meaningful and positive way.

AVA X Red Bull Presents: Max Cooper Live A/V | Carlisle Church, Belfast

Streamed Globally on 18.11.2020, 20.00 GMT

The homecoming performance for Max Cooper was filmed live in Belfast at Carlisle Church in collaboration with AVA Festival, Red Bull and The Arts Council Northern Ireland.

This recording is the first electronic performance in the 145 year old venue, marking a special occasion for the city. On the edge of inner-city Belfast, Carlisle Memorial Church was built in 1875 in a distinctive neo-gothic style, highlighting Belfast’s impressive architectural legacy.

Max Cooper:
«It’s a beautiful space inside the old restored Carlisle Church in Belfast. My main aim was to try and complement the structure with my music and visual projections, framing the imagery around the architecture, and trying to put together something musically and visually to match. I brought along a semi-transparent gauze screen to sit in front of me, so I could alternate between a high-res uninterrupted image and the broken imagery across the church, as well as blend them together. We also added strobes to further highlight the built structure for some peaks. Then I just had some fun with it. Massive thanks to everyone at AVA festival for coming up with the idea to do this and to AVA the partners for making it happen.»
